Thyroid

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck that plays a vital role in regulating the body’s metabolism through the release of hormones. Thyroid disorders occur when the gland produces either too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or too little (hypothyroidism). These imbalances can affect various bodily functions, leading to symptoms such as weight changes, fatigue, mood swings, and irregular heart rate. Thyroid problems are more common in women and may be caused by autoimmune conditions, iodine deficiency, or genetic factors. Proper diagnosis through blood tests and appropriate treatment can help manage thyroid disorders effectively.

  • Function: The thyroid gland controls metabolism, energy levels, and many vital body functions.
  • Disorders: Common conditions include hypothyroidism (underactive) and hyperthyroidism (overactive).
  • Symptoms: Can include weight gain or loss, fatigue, hair thinning, mood changes, and temperature sensitivity.
  • Diagnosis: Detected through blood tests measuring TSH, T3, and T4 hormone levels.
